Who We Are

Weetumuw School is a Wôpanâak culture and language school, operated by the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Our school houses two classrooms: Mukayuhsak Weekuw (The Children’s House) for preschool and kindergarten (ages 2.9-6) and Wushkeenune8ak Weekuw (The Young People’s House) for elementary school students (ages 6-9). The primary classroom is located in the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Government Center, and the elementary classroom is located in the red yurt on the powwow field. The school employs a Montessori pedagogy in service to Wampanoag culture and language.

Culture-based curriculum

Weetumuw School endeavors to eliminate the separation of culture and education. Our faculty works hard to make Wampanoag culture the culture of the classroom. Through Wampanoag values, daily practices, stories, ceremony, traditions, and the inclusion of culture keepers of all the Wampanoag communities, Weetmuw School teaches students to be proud of their heritage, and their people, and to live unapologetically as Wampanoag people in every facet of their lives, including their classroom.
